However, it went on a long hiatus after the release of v3.4.3 in December 2003 which proved to be remarkably stable and was enjoyed by the community for almost a decade. NetHack underwent active development for nearly 15 years. It is the most popular of all Hacklike games, and quite possibly the most popular of all roguelike games. NetHack is a major roguelike in which the player must fight their way down through the Dungeons of Doom, and then the underworld (Gehennom), retrieve the Amulet of Yendor, fight their way back up to surface, and give the Amulet to their god. UPDATE: I've now beat the game a couple of times, on easy, playing as the archer. Why wipe the save when the player dies? Combined with the cheap deaths as described above this just serves to make the game frustrating and unfair. Here's my latest game: played for half an hour, carefully making progress and having fun. ![]() In the end it serves only to massively frustrate, and badly lets down an otherwise great game. ![]() I'm playing it on easy and still get killed "out of the blue" by a boss encounter or accidental move or some other dumb reason. This is a great game BUT simply too hard.
